  SYLOMER ®

Vibration isolation - Noise reduction - Shock absorption

ATC is a company specialising in the cutting, fabrication, and adhesive treatment of elastomers. Our mastery of these methods means we can offer you SYLOMER ®

as a bare product, in reels
as a semi finished product in the form of pads or strips
as a finished product in the form of transformer feet or machine feet, etc.

But first and foremost allow us to present SYLOMER to you, with its extensive high performance characteristics.

Definition of SYLOMER ® :

Sylomer is a high performance cellular polyurethane elastomer in the “PUR” family.
Its performance is much better than that of natural rubber due to its molecular structure. SYLOMER ® is a foam, endowing it with very high volume compressibility characteristics. Its structure gives it the following advantages:

RUniform load distribution (concrete base, building foundation, etc.)
Static decoupling (ceiling suspension, loudspeaker decoupling, etc.)
Dynamic decoupling (compressor, rotating machinery, etc.)
Shock absorption (press, transfer machine, etc.)

Usage restrictions:

SYLOMER ® is very tough, which is one of the main reasons for its success.
It can be laid directly on the floor in buildings because it is not sensitive to water or mud penetration, is unaffected by frost, and can withstand accidental overloads up to 50 times its design load.
In industry, it withstands all hydrocarbons, oils, greases, alkaline detergents, and refrigeration fluids.
But perfection does not exist on this earth, and in this case it does not withstand aggression by Acetone or Trichlorethylene.

Temperature range -30 to +70°C

Fire rating: M4 It is normally as inflammable as wood but does not give off any toxic vapours.

SYLOMER ® stock sizes:

Sylomer is made in standard 5m x 1.5m rolls and in a thickness of 25mm, but our company ATC can cut it to shape and also reduice its thickness by cutting. We can also offer it in thicknesses greater than 25mm by gluing.

Other SYLOMER ® advantages :

Besides all the characteristics mentioned above, SYLOMER ®:

Is very resistant to abrasion. It is used in clamps for handling plasterboard, as a covering on filter screens, etc.

Has high anti-slip properties.

Is highly resistant to tearing.

The damping value “d” corresponds to half the mechanical loss factor, i.e., F = 2 x d. This value characterises the ability of a resilient material to absorb energy from a machine when it begins resonating. When you set a natural frequency of suspension, you want it to be as low as possible to give the best vibration filter. But with rotating machinery in particular, the rotational speed rises from stationary to the design speed (excitation frequency), and when this speed coincides with the natural frequency, the machine resonates. The notion of damping “d” then becomes very important in enabling a reduction in vibration when this frequency is crossed.

SYLOMER ® is compatible with many glues, making it easy to apply and adaptable to any backing material (metal, plastic, etc.)

Some areas in which SYLOMER ® is used:

Railways: frequently used beneath rail tracks where trains pass close to houses, in order to attenuate the vibrational frequency generated. It can also be found on nearly all TRAMLINES constructed in the last 30 years.

Building: used as non-recoverable shuttering in the foundations of many buildings. Active filtration for concert halls to prevent transmission of vibrations to adjoining buildings. Passive filtration for housing areas close to underground railways, for hospitals which very sensitive to structure-borne noise, as well as banks, data centres, etc.

Offices: air conditioning systems are the source of many structure-borne transmissions which must be attenuated by SYLOMER ® pads. The same goes for lifts.

Energy: decoupling of transformers

Industry: when dynamic factors do not come into play it can be placed directly under machines. For the likes of presses, generators, and industrial washing machines, however, which need to be rigidly held down, SYLOMER ® is placed under the concrete base.

Moving machinery for farms and earthworks: tractors and mechanical shovels are fast becoming technological jewels and need to be protected from external structure-borne vibrations as well as internal ones (engine noise). The occupational health services also demand minimisation of the vibrations to which drivers are subjected.

SYLOMER ® related products

SYLOMER ® is the best known product in the family because it combines the characteristics of each of the others, and most of the time both filtering and damping are required.

Nonetheless, since SYLOMER ® is a two-purpose product incorporating both filtering and damping characteristics, it is no real surprise that the individual performances of SYLODYN ® as a pure filter and SYLOMER HD ® as a pure damper are better than those of SYLOMER ®.

SYLODYN ®:

This product is characterised by its dynamic stiffness which is almost the equal of its static stiffness. It has a very low mechanical loss factor and therefore behaves rather like a metal spring. Its main characteristics are shown below.

Other SYLODYN ® advantages

As for SYLOMER ® with the exception of the mechanical loss factor. As explained above, SYLODYN ® behaves as a spring and is thus a better vibration filter than SYLOMER ®. It is however unsuitable for rotating machinery.

Some areas in which SYLODYN ® is used:

Railways: it is also used in applications where the lowest natural frequencies are to be obtained.

Building: its greater static load and lower natural frequency range makes its use in this area even more frequent than that of SYLOMER ®.

Offices: used in certain special cases.

Energy: decoupling of transformers for lower frequencies.

Industry: a lot less used than SYLOMER ® because of its lack of damping.

SYLODAMP ® (SYLOMER HD ®):

Conversely to SYLODYN ®, this product has a very high mechanical loss factor and therefore behaves as a shock absorber. Its main characteristics are shown below:
